Porting & "Polishing"
The pictures you are looking at are all off our R1 race
bike which has recently won a National round of the Formula Extreme Championship.
The R1 cylinder is a very time consuming head to improve
on as it has 5 valves and the ports are already very good to start with.
But with a lot a patience you will be rewarded for the time spent. It is
vital not to attack these heads blindly as it will result in big losses
every time. Very little material is removed as the job is more about refining
than anything else.
You may also notice that the finished result is not
polished. This is because it just doesn't flow as well, or atomize fuel
as well. Polished ports may look pretty, but they don't work as well as
these ones do.
We have also developed our own port surface to maximise
these effects and encourage the charge to swirl as it moves through the
port, further increasing both flow and atomization.
